Q&A with Paul Erlinger
Who is Paul Erlinger, and what’s your background?
I’m based in Austin, Texas, and I’ve spent the last 30 years in the HVAC industry. I actually started out on the power side of the business before moving into cooling and environmental control, which has been my focus ever since.
I’ve worked with companies like Stulz, a global leader in cooling and humidity control for data centers, as well as Rittal and SPX (Marley). Along the way, I also held global sales roles for data center specialists, operating at an international scale.
What has been the common thread throughout your career?
Mission‑critical environments. Whether it’s technology, business or engineering, my focus has always been on applications where performance and reliability are non‑negotiable. When systems fail, the consequences are huge - so getting it right really matters.
Why has Texas been such a good fit for your work?
Texas is a very pro‑business environment, with strong roots in petrochemical, oil and heavy industrial sectors. Over time, that’s been paired with explosive growth in the data center market.
Everything here is on a massive scale. Facilities have grown bigger, more complex and more expensive - and it happened incredibly quickly, almost as if no one saw it coming.
How has AI changed the data center landscape?
AI has accelerated everything. It’s dramatically reshaped how cooling strategies are designed and deployed, often across multiple locations at once. The complexity, density and speed of deployment have all increased - and that puts pressure on every part of the supply chain.
What does your day‑to‑day role look like at FläktGroup?
No two weeks are the same. I work with a wide range of internal and external teams on different projects, often simultaneously.
I'm an easy going guy, focused on customer relationships - My role is really about being the link between engineering, the factories and the customer - making sure what’s designed can actually be built, tested, delivered and performs exactly as promised. Reliability, sustainability and speed are constant pressures, especially as customers push to deploy capacity faster than ever.
How is scale changing customer expectations?
Scale defines everything now. Many customers want factory‑assembled, modular solutions that can be delivered and slotted in like Lego blocks. That reduces on‑site construction time, cost and risk.
For FläktGroup, that means more testing, more assembly and more precision inside our manufacturing facilities - but the payoff is faster, safer and more competitive outcomes for our customers.
When did you join FläktGroup, and what have you seen so far?
I joined in December 2024, and the growth since then has been impressive. We’ve brought in highly experienced professionals across the business, and the overall capability of the team has grown fast.
Our customers are also extremely knowledgeable and well resourced. That raises expectations even further - but that’s a good thing. They expect us to be experts, and that’s exactly what we aim to be.
What excites you about FläktGroup’s acquisition by Samsung?
I’m genuinely enthusiastic about it. I’d previously worked with Samsung as a customer, so now being on the same team is a big positive.
What keeps you motivated as the US data center market continues to grow?
The pace and the scale. The market shows no signs of slowing, and that means constant challenges - but also huge opportunities.
At the end of the day, my focus is on pulling teams together, moving fast and delivering at scale, so the digital world can keep running - no matter how big it gets.
