Engineering Success: Tools to Team Leadership at FläktGroup
I started out in 2009 straight from college as an Improver, where I was buddied up with an engineer full time for the first three months. From then on, I mixed between working with my mentor and out on my own gaining more knowledge on the different type of Air conditioning and Refrigeration equipment we had on contract across the Northwest area. Picking up new skills both communicating with customers and engineering hands on. I built up a good rapport with customers and some have remained good friends today, not just work colleagues.
Working at different sites weekly I transitioned from an Improver to Service engineer, where I enjoyed the challenge of keeping the equipment running, whether it be maintenance, repairs, or reactive call outs to keep the customers happy. Moving around to different sites helped keep the role interesting and I slowly progressed from general maintenance and repairs, to running small projects, then, eventually having an apprentice of my own.
10 years into the company and now having a vast knowledge of the Denco equipment we manufacture, I was put forward for Commissioning training, to be the fall back if commissioning was needed in the North. Mixing between commissioning projects and continuing to look after the Northwest / Wales patch as a Service engineer, an opportunity came up internally to apply for the Deputy Service Manager role in the Northern region. It was the career progression I felt I was ready for and was made up to be successful following interview.
Working on the tools out on the road gave me a more instant job satisfaction with the completion of a job in 1 or 2 days, but my role now gives me greater long-term satisfaction to see something myself and the team have been working on to be completed and over the line.
I worked for 4 years as Deputy Service Manager in the Northern region before being promoted to Service Manager in February of 2025. Having used skills picked up over my previous years with the company to interact with customers both regionally and nationally. Plus, engineers, sales, and projects personnel in our head office to keep the Northern region running as smoothly as possible. That is one thing about FläktGroup I see as a big positive, we always look to employ internally before reaching out to external candidates where possible. Which, I see as vital to the business as it keeps employees at FläktGroup for a long period of time, meaning knowledge is kept within the company.
I have enjoyed my so far 16 years with FläktGroup and want to stay here for many years to come.
