Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
Transparent, verified environmental data supporting sustainable design and smarter HVAC decisions.
Environmental transparency that supports green buildings, compliance and responsible design.
What is an EPD and why is it important?
An EPD (A Type III Environmental Product Declaration) is a standardised document developed according to EN 15804 and based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. It provides quantified data, verified by a third party, on the environmental impact of a product throughout its entire life cycle. This makes EPDs a trusted and comprehensive source of information for:
- Green building certifications (LEED, BREEAM, DGNB)
- Sustainable design
- ESG reporting and climate strategies
- Transparent communication with customers and stakeholders
And more...
EPDs are data-driven, enable fair comparisons and are credible.
EPD FAQs
What is an EPD?
Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are standardized documents which transparently communicate the verified environmental performance of our products across their entire life cycle—from raw material extraction and manufacturing to transport, use, and end-of-life. They are developed in accordance with international standards (ISO 14025, EN 15804).
EPDs provide reliable data on key impact indicators such as carbon footprint, energy and water use, supporting sustainable design, regulatory compliance, and informed decision-making.
How to use EPDs?
Our EPDs provide transparent and reliable data, enabling:
- Confident specification of our HVAC solutions
- A comprehensive view of a product’s environmental performance across all stages of its life cycle
- Informed decisions for sustainable construction
- Support for green building certifications (LEED, BREEAM, DGNB)
For HVAC products, environmental performance is defined not only by how they are manufactured, but also by how efficiently they operate over time. Our EPDs demonstrate our commitment to responsible manufacturing, high energy efficiency, and long-term sustainability.
What are the requirements of EPDs and how are they verified?
Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) must follow strict international standards, primarily ISO 14025 and EN 15804, to ensure reliability, credibility, and comparability. Key requirements include:
- Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): An EPD must be based on a thorough life cycle assessment covering raw material extraction, manufacturing, transport, use, and end-of-life.
- System boundaries: The scope of the life cycle assessment is explicitly defined to show which stages and processes are included.
- Third-party verification: An independent, accredited verifier reviews the LCA methodology and data to confirm accuracy and compliance with standards. FläktGroup’s EPDs are verified through the EPD Hub platform.
- Transparency and reproducibility: All assumptions, data sources, and calculation methods must be clearly documented.
- Declared indicators: EPDs report standardized environmental indicators, including global warming potential (carbon footprint), energy and water consumption, ozone depletion, acidification, eutrophication, and other relevant impacts.
How to read and interpret an EPD?
An EPD provides a comprehensive summary of a product’s environmental performance, typically presented in tables and charts organized according to the life cycle modules.
EPDs break down a product’s life cycle into individual modules:
- A – Product stage
- B – Use stage
- C – End-of-life stage
- D – Benefits and loads beyond the system boundary
For HVAC equipment, the most relevant modules are A1–A3 and B6.
Some modules are data-driven, based on actual measurements or supplier information—primarily the product stage (A1–A3) and use stage (B6)—reflecting the real performance of materials, manufacturing, and operation.
Other modules, such as A4 (Transport to site), A5 (Installation), C (End-of-life), and D (Benefits beyond the system boundary), are scenario-based, modeled using assumptions derived from statistics and industry averages.
What to look for in a EPD for HVAC Products?
For HVAC systems, the modules with the highest environmental impact are:
- A1–A3: Product stage – includes impacts from raw material extraction, transport to production site, and manufacturing processes.
- B6: Energy use during operation – covers the energy consumption throughout the operational life of the product.
While manufacturing impacts are important, the use phase is where HVAC systems make the biggest difference. Module B6 typically accounts for the largest share of a product’s total environmental impact because HVAC systems are designed to operate for decades.
When interpreting EPD results, it is essential to consider the product’s reference service life and functional/declared unit.
How is an EPD made?
The main steps of creating an EPD are:
- Defining the scope: Deciding which stages of the product’s life cycle will be assessed, from raw materials to end-of-life.
- Collecting data: Gathering information from suppliers and production sites about materials, manufacturing, and operational use.
- Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): Using specialized software to calculate the environmental impacts based on the collected data.
- Finalizing the EPD: Compiling the results into a clear document with tables, charts, and standardized environmental indicators.
- Verification: An independent, accredited reviewer checks the EPD to ensure it is accurate and meets international standards (ISO 14025, EN 15804).
- Publishing: The verified EPD is made publicly available on the publisher’s website so interested parties can access reliable environmental information.
How can I access FläktGroup EPDs?
We are actively expanding our EPD coverage, aiming to include approximately 95% of our product portfolio by the end of 2026, reflecting our dedication to transparency, innovation, and environmentally conscious design.
All our certified EPDs are openly accessible through the EPD Hub. They can also be found on each product page on our website and directly within our selection software tools.
In our selection tool Select, environmental performance values are available for each specific configuration under the Environmental Data tab. Here, you can find GWP total and GWP fossil values for life cycle stages A1–A3, derived from the corresponding published EPD.
